Machine Hardware

Here are some of the most common resources for setting up and maintaining your own webserver. You will find resources that I have found to be useful to many of my colocation customers. Be sure to let me know if you have any questions or if there is something you have found useful that you would like to share with others. Send me an email at ashaver@he.net

Used ISP hardware site Routers, Cobalt's etc

Good Systems for High Density

Aopen.com offers some very nice systems that only require 180 watt and 230 watt power supplies which allow for much higher density in your cabinet space. These systems are small and support P4 systems with 1 to 2 IDE harddrives. These also feature a stepping power supply which only uses what it needs rather than the full power of the power supply (unlike most American power supplies.) These allow for up to 25 boxes on a 15 amp circuit depending on your configuration.

Preconfigured Webserver

Plesk.comWebserver management software. This is a very nice and simple product that will do all your pop3 boxes and dns as well as dns alaising if you wish to offer hosting with each reseller using their own dns servers.

Corel's Netwinder

Cobalt The Cobalt Raq2 is very cool. It can do up to 200 domains.

Sahara Datebook A very cool machine that is also small. It doesn't have the webserver installed but is still worth a mention. Saves quite a bit of space. Makes a really nice dns machine or webserver.

TechnoLand Finally a 1U PIII system. In a PIII 500 Mhz configuration w/128 MB of Ram and a 8.4 GB IDE drive with ethernet and 24x CD-ROM it is $1899. They sell the system built and ready to go. 1-800-292-4500 or info@technoland.com

Rackmount Cases

Good resources for rackmount cases are:

  • Siliconrax They have a nice 4U rackmount case for a really good price. It isn't listed on thier website but they will tell you about it if you call. Their phone number is 408-720-1090. It is $175 for the case and $50 for a 300 Watt power supply.

  • Cinch Material This is a new one that a customer refered me to. They are supposed to have good pricing and nice cases.

  • California PC Products Their phone number is 1-800-394-4122 x 330 for Mike Ham. They are more expensive but make really good cases. They are optium for Raid systems and also offer a really nice 2U Case (it is under 4 inches tall). If you use a 2U case you will need to also use a motherboard that has everything onboard. A good choice is the Intel Nightshade board. It is more expensive than most boards but you do end up saving after you add in all the components.

  • Golden Valley Systems You can reach them by phone at 408-934-5898 ask for Steve Chen. They have a 2U case that has for $350 which includes a 150 watt power supply. This should be fine if you are running unix with 2 harddrives and don't require a cdrom. You can also reach Steve by email at steve@gvsystems.com. One of the really nice features is that they include both riser cards so you don't have to use Intel Nightshade boards. Normally you have the additional expense if you choose another type of board that doesn't have onboard video or ethernet.

Setting the BIOS on an Asus Motherboard

Webserver Hardware

Switches are definately the best way to go. You can get some really good pricing from MicroWarehouse.

If you are looking for Sun Machines a good alternative is a Sun clone. These are Sun motherboards and Sun CPU's made by the Sun Microelectronics division but Sun doesn't allow them to put their name on the outside of the case. Most Sun clones are about 1/2 the cost that you would pay for the Sun Machine. A good source is Tatung. You can reach Jeff at 408-383-0988.

Raid Configurations

Systems recomendations will be coming soon.

Drivers for controller cards can be found here.
dac960 and Mylex 1164-2 (eXtreme Raid controller card) use the same driver. Please note this raid controller card isn't compatable with Solaris.
